Mini Review

In the world of the MMO, there is a formula that is generally followed. Nearly every game out there follows this formula. Create character, hear background information, and start fighting. Most fantasy based MMOs generally start out with “Kill ten of these frolicking woodland creatures.” Then you move on to the bigger game. I say generally because in A Tale in the Desert V this isn’t true at all. In fact there is no fighting. “An MMO with no fighting” you say? “How can this be?” A Tale in the Desert V made by EGenesis is unlike any MMO I’ve ever seen. This game is all about living la vida Egypt, as you learn skills to become a productive member of Egyptian society.

We start, as with all MMOs, with character creation. The more creative out there might be disappointed with the limited choices. Diversification is in short supply. Once you’ve selected a gender, you have three basic characters to choose from, with a small number of color, and wardrobe selections available. As an added bonus though, you can change these features whenever you like, so you’re not stuck getting bored with the same outfit. The color palette of the game definitely puts you in mind of the desert. Everything is done in shades of washed out tans. Colors are muted, and almost faded, which –while it does serve the purpose of setting an effective mood- does make you desperate for a splash of color after a while. The 3d graphics circa 1999 are really nothing to write home about either. Still, all of that together does nothing to detract from how much FUN this game is. I can tell you right now, this is a love it or hate it type of game. The main focus is on resource gathering. Micromanagement is the driving force here. It’s a lot like the old Impressions game Pharaoh in that regard. Gathering slate and wood to make a wood plane to cut boards to build a brick rack to make bricks out of the mud and sand and straw you’ve gathered so you can use those bricks to build something else. Running to the arts school, or the architect school to learn to farm and build. It’s hard to describe exactly why this game is so much fun,( and don’t get me wrong, it is). I think the crux of it is because it makes such a refreshing change from the grind-and-kill of modern MMOs. It differs from the common MMO in one other respect, the community. In most MMOs you can really decide whether or not you want to deal with other people. You can play on your own, or join a guild. Not so in A Tale in the Desert V. Here the world IS the community. Survival almost DEPENDS on building a network, joining a guild, working together. Perhaps it is because of this that the community is so helpful. The community as a whole goes above and beyond to make new players feel welcome. From helpful advice, to tools and seeds, everyone is there to help everyone else, and that above all else really makes this game work.

Not really the best game to play. Graphics and the gameplay setting is poor. It is so boring, I don’t know why I tried to play the game, maybe I was so bored at that time. LOL
